Ok, I am getting this off my chest right now. This is not news to those who know me, but for some it just might be. Ok, are you ready? Sitting down? Brace yourself? Did you fill out the waiver before reading this? Ok, here goes… “My name is Vince Craig, I live in Calgary Alberta Canada and I am a Vancouver Canucks fan!” Phew, there… I said it. Thank you!
So why all the hate from you people and cities east of BC? Why is the playoff excitement only happening there? I am shocked, and saddened at this Country that I love so deeply. It is not like this is Montreal heading to the Stanley Cup, this is Vancouver. Home of the newly wed and nearly dead. What has Vancouver done to earn this slap in the face of hockey fans all across this nation? Did we pee in the cornflakes of every Canadian Hockey fan at some point? Did we smoke a bowl out of the Stanley Cup? No, we have never had the cup! ( Ok, there was the Millionaires that won the Stanley back in 1915 or something, and even though I have pulled that fan card out from time to time, lets be honest, I am pretty sure that was back before color was invented. ) We are the underdogs here, Canada is the underdog here! Everybody loves to cheer for the underdog. Don’t they?
The last Canadian team to win the Stanley cup was Montreal in 1993, freakin 1993! 18 years ago! Melon was still a virgin back then. (Inside joke.) Canada has dominated the world hockey stage in every other competition. Worlds, Juniors, Olympics, Male / Female we rule! This is our game, your game, his game, her game, and freakin my game! And like Tim’s says, it is more than a game. It is in our thoughts, dreams, blood, and community. This is our game, end of story!
There is a youtube clip out there that somebody put together, and that person is a hero. It shows this Country’s reaction to “The Golden Goal”.
There is give or take 33 Million people in Canada, ( Don’t quote me on that number ) and it was estimated that 26 Million people watched the gold medal game, in their homes, neighborhood pubs, and even out in the streets in front of giant TVs and under big Molson tents. Do the math, almost this entire Country watch that game UNITED, as one. And when that gold went in, an entire Country cheered loudly, proudly, and for the entire world to hear. Sigh…give me a moment… sniff sniff…gees, there are only three things in this life a man is allowed to cry at, Old Yeller, Rudy, and the Golden Goal.
Now the Stanley Cup and the Olympics are two different beasts. I use that point to only illustrate our passion for the game. Darryl Sutter once said that are only three things that are important to a man; His family, his God, and his game. Only at certain times of the year, the priority changes. When the Flames had their run, Calgary went nutz. The Red Mile was born, jerseys were flying off the shelves, it was hard to find a car without flags on, and the Country backed the team, well maybe except Montreal. Sadly they couldn’t get it done. Fans don’t seem to want to talk about game 6 either, so I won’t go there. Unfortunately, I still wonder how many of those jerseys are now lost in a closet with the price tag still on.
When Edmonton had their cup run, we cheered for them too. Wow, back to back 8th seed western teams scraping, clawing and fighting their way to the top. The Oilers were back, and memories of the Dynasty came rushing back for people and a new generation of fan. Generation? Well yes, it had been that long. Ok, maybe except fans from Montreal. That probably brought back bad memories for them. But in the same fate, they couldn’t get it done.
Now it is the Canucks turn. But aside from the news, you would hardly know the playoffs are even on. Oh wait, I guess there is social media now and on Facebook, all I see is “ABC” anyone but the Canucks. Go Hawks, Go Nashville, Go Sharks and so on. Nashville? Freakin Nashville? Really, how dense are you? How many of you have even been to Nashville? As well, I always get the “well there is more Canadian players on that team anyway”. Bite me! The fact remains, if Nashville wins the cup, to me; the Country, the city and it citizens win. I don’t care if the Hawks or Boston or whoever has more Canadian Players, I cheer for a Canadian Team first! One who’s head office is right here in the best Country in the world.
Well tonight we find out who we face in the finials, Boston, or Tampa. To me it doesn’t matter. I believe in my team, and I believe they will get the job done. I have held that belief for many years and this year, it will pay off. What would be pretty cool is to see Tampa get in again, and have the Canucks beat them in 6 games or less. Take that, Flames fans! When my team was out, I jumped on your wagon, a Canadian Wagon. When the Oilers were in, they keep my seat warm. Well this bus is leaving and if you don’t want on, fine by me. (Hey Montreal, back of the bus.) I say Lou for Mayor and the Canucks for Canada!
GO Nucks GO!
